A new, modern extension with sweeping bi-fold doors, called for a garden design with layers of interest that were just as effective from inside the house as outside.
The clients asked for a contemporary space, but to ensure the garden would settle down into the surroundings, it also needed a softness and warmth.
A large terrace, stretching the width of the garden and house, had already been created, so the design needed to incorporate this in a way that looked seamless. It provided a great opportunity to create multiple routes around the garden. To one side, a formal brick paver pathway hugs the lawn and leads down to a smaller terrace that catches the evening sun. On the other side a gravel garden area counterbalances the linear shapes and creates a space where the lines between plants and pathways are more blurred.
Archways around the smaller terrace help to create an intimate space, that feels tucked away from the house which also adding height and structure.
